PEOPLE are being encouraged to explore an "oasis of calm" in Keighley.

A series of walks is being staged alongside the River Worth.

Amongst those behind the initiative is environmental charity the Aire Rivers Trust, which wants the public to help shape the future of the Worth.

The charity's latest project, River Worth Restoration, aims to improve footpaths and green spaces along the route of the watercourse.

It is working closely with conservation group the River Worth Friends on the venture, which is supported by Keighley Big Local and the Towns Fund.

Simon Watts, operations manager with the Aire Rivers Trust, says: "Our rivers are our connection to the wider world.

"Their good health is vital to so many species of wildlife and we’re excited to be part of a project that will see the River Worth go from strength to strength.

"It is an oasis of calm amongst our busy town and well worth exploring.

"We want to bring more people to the river, to care for and enjoy it. We couldn’t achieve this without our many volunteers who help with conservation work and 'pollution hunting' along the length of the river.

"We're working in close conjunction with the River Worth Friends, but we also want to hear from local communities about where they would like to see improvements. We are seeking to bring new life to the river through improving access and creating more homes for nature.

"The river already hosts a huge range of wildlife – from kingfishers to otters, and fish that have travelled enormous distances to make their home in the town. Possibly the most stunning fish found in the Worth is the grayling."

Chris Tribe, from the River Worth Friends, says: "The river provides a green corridor running through our communities and we are pleased to be working with Big Local and the Aire Rivers Trust to enhance it as a benefit for both wildlife and the people of the area."

The walks take place next Saturday (January 21), on Tuesday January 24 and on Sunday, January 29. People should meet at the bus stop at the end of Aireworth Grove – BD21 4DL – at 10.15am. The walks are described as gentle and will end at a cafe.

The Aire Rivers Trust runs weekly clean-ups and riverside improvement volunteer days in Bradford and Craven every Thursday and Friday. For more details, visit aireriverstrust.org.uk/volunteer.
